For families with young children, the space is ideal — there's room to run, explore and be themselves, which is exactly when the most natural photos happen. The tall eucalypts filter the afternoon light beautifully, casting a warm, dappled glow that works especially well for relaxed, candid portraits.

I often recommend Kings Park for families who want variety in their session — we can move between open lawns, bushland paths and river-view spots all within the same shoot. The DNA Tower area and the Synergy Parkland are particularly photogenic, and the light in the hour before sunset is consistently stunning.

Kings Park is centrally located and easy to reach from most Perth suburbs, making it a practical choice as well as a beautiful one.

Heathcote Reserve Family Photography Perth

Perry Lakes is well located for families in Floreat, City Beach, Churchlands, Wembley and the surrounding western suburbs, and parking is easy — a small but welcome practical consideration when you're arriving with children and bags in tow.

South Perth Foreshore Family Photography

The South Perth Foreshore is one of Perth's most iconic riverside settings, and it offers something that few other locations can match — the Perth city skyline reflected across the Swan River as a backdrop.
The wide, grassy foreshore along Sir James Mitchell Park gives children plenty of space to move, while the riverside path, mature Moreton Bay fig trees and manicured gardens offer a variety of natural backdrops within a short walk. For families who want a mix of open space, riverside atmosphere and a distinctly Perth feel to their portraits, this location delivers all three.
The foreshore is particularly beautiful in the last hour of afternoon light, when the sun drops behind the city and the river takes on a golden tone. It's easily accessible from the South Perth ferry terminal, which can itself make for a fun family outing around the session.

Bold Park Family Photography

Bold Park in City Beach is one of Perth's hidden gems for family photography — and one of my personal favourites for families who want something a little different from the usual beach or riverside setting.
The park's natural bushland feels genuinely wild. Walking tracks wind through native banksia woodland, with dappled light filtering through the canopy and patches of open ground that photograph beautifully. It has a quiet, unhurried quality that helps families — and especially children — relax quickly.
Bold Park works particularly well for families who love the outdoors, or whose children are at an age where they're curious and active. The environment gives kids something to engage with — sticks, rocks, lizards — and those moments of genuine curiosity make for some of the most honest photographs.
The park is close to City Beach and Floreat, so it's easy to combine with a short beach session if you'd like a mix of bush and ocean in the same afternoon.

Matilda Bay Family Photography

Matilda Bay is one of my favourite late afternoon locations on the Swan River and one that I think is quietly underrated for family photography in Perth.

The bay sits in a sheltered curve of the river near Crawley, and that sheltering is one of its great practical advantages. On afternoons when a strong Fremantle Doctor is pushing in from the coast and making beach sessions uncomfortable — hair across faces, children squinting, everyone a little frazzled — Matilda Bay is often calm and still. That makes it a reliable choice for the golden-hour sessions I love most, when the light is warm and low, but the sea breeze can otherwise be a real challenge.

The location itself offers a beautiful variety of natural backdrops within a short walk. Large, established trees line the grassed areas and provide shade and dappled light earlier in the afternoon, while the sandy shoreline along the river's edge gives a softer, more open feel. The open lawns in between give children space to move freely, which is always valuable — the best family photographs rarely happen when everyone is standing still.

Children respond particularly well to Matilda Bay. The shallow water's edge and the small sandy beach naturally draw them in, and those moments of genuine curiosity and exploration — crouching down to look at something, wading in just a little too far — are often where the most honest and memorable photographs come from.
In the late afternoon, the light across the bay from the west is consistently lovely. The water picks up warm tones, the trees glow, and the whole setting has a calm, timeless quality that suits relaxed, natural family portraits beautifully.
Matilda Bay is well located for families in Crawley, Nedlands, Claremont, Dalkeith and the broader western suburbs, and parking along Hackett Drive is generally straightforward
