Based in Attadale and travelling across Perth—I often photograph families on the sand at Cottesloe Beach, near the groyne, where the light softens beautifully at sunset. I often recommend Lake Claremont or the leafy area at Matilda Bay, by The Swan River, for outdoor portraits.
Cottesloe Beach Family Photography
Cottesloe Beach offers stunning sunset light and wide open space for relaxed family portraits. The soft sand, ocean colours and iconic groynes create timeless natural photographs for Perth families.
Point Walter, Attadale Family Photography Perth
Point Walter in Attadale on the Swan River is a beautiful location for relaxed family photography in Perth. The wide grass areas, river views and sandy shoreline create a calm, open setting where children can explore and families can spend time together.
It’s particularly lovely in the evening when the sunset light reflects across the river, creating soft, warm tones that work beautifully for natural family photographs.
Here are more locations that work particularly well for family photography sessions in Perth
Kings Park Family Photography
Kings Park is one of Perth's most loved settings for family portraits, and it's easy to see why. The vast open lawns, ancient native bushland and sweeping views across the Swan River to the city skyline give photographers an enormous variety of backdrops within walking distance of each other.
For families with young children, the space is ideal — there's room to run, explore and be themselves, which is exactly when the most natural photos happen. The tall eucalypts filter the afternoon light beautifully, casting a warm, dappled glow that works especially well for relaxed, candid portraits.
I often recommend Kings Park for families who want variety in their session — we can move between open lawns, bushland paths and river-view spots all within the same shoot. The DNA Tower area and the Synergy Parkland are particularly photogenic, and the light in the hour before sunset is consistently stunning.
Kings Park is centrally located and easy to reach from most Perth suburbs, making it a practical choice as well as a beautiful one.
Heathcote Reserve Family Photography Perth
Heathcote Reserve in Applecross is one of the Swan River's most beautiful stretches for family photography. The reserve combines open grassed areas, mature native trees and wide river views in a setting that feels both spacious and intimate.
The light at Heathcote in the late afternoon is consistently excellent — soft and warm across the lawns, with longer shadows that add depth and dimension to portraits. Children respond well to the open space here, and the river's edge gives them something to gravitate toward naturally, which helps produce genuinely candid moments.
Heathcote is a particularly good choice for families in Applecross, Ardross, Mount Pleasant, Booragoon and the broader Melville area, and it sits close enough to the water that a sandy riverside edge is always within easy reach if you'd like a mix of grass and shoreline in the same session.
Minim Cove Family Photography Perth
Minim Cove is a small, quiet inlet near Mosman Park that many Perth families haven't discovered, which is part of what makes it so lovely for photography. Tucked beside the Swan River, the cove has a small sandy beach, gentle water's edge and natural bush surroundings that create an intimate, unhurried atmosphere.
Because the cove faces west across the river, the evening light here can be extraordinary — warm, soft and lasting. It suits families who want something a little more secluded and personal than a busy beach or popular park, and the natural setting means photos have a timeless quality that doesn't date.
Minim Cove works well for all family sizes and ages, but it's particularly lovely for smaller family groups and for sessions where the goal is quiet connection rather than action and movement.
Perry Lakes Reserve Family Photography Perth
Perry Lakes Reserve in Floreat is a spacious and peaceful location that consistently produces beautiful family photographs. The wide open lawns, shaded walking paths and elegant rows of tall trees give the reserve a quietly grand quality — it feels less busy and more unhurried than some of Perth's more popular locations.
For families with younger children, the open grass is ideal — there's no need to stay on a path or worry about little ones wandering. The soft evening light filtering through the avenue of trees along the main paths creates a warm, timeless look that suits both relaxed candid sessions and slightly more considered portrait work.
Perry Lakes is well located for families in Floreat, City Beach, Churchlands, Wembley and the surrounding western suburbs, and parking is easy — a small but welcome practical consideration when you're arriving with children and bags in tow.
South Perth Foreshore Family Photography
The South Perth Foreshore is one of Perth's most iconic riverside settings, and it offers something that few other locations can match — the Perth city skyline reflected across the Swan River as a backdrop.
The wide, grassy foreshore along Sir James Mitchell Park gives children plenty of space to move, while the riverside path, mature Moreton Bay fig trees and manicured gardens offer a variety of natural backdrops within a short walk. For families who want a mix of open space, riverside atmosphere and a distinctly Perth feel to their portraits, this location delivers all three.
The foreshore is particularly beautiful in the last hour of afternoon light, when the sun drops behind the city and the river takes on a golden tone. It's easily accessible from the South Perth ferry terminal, which can itself make for a fun family outing around the session.
Bold Park Family Photography
Bold Park in City Beach is one of Perth's hidden gems for family photography — and one of my personal favourites for families who want something a little different from the usual beach or riverside setting.
The park's natural bushland feels genuinely wild. Walking tracks wind through native banksia woodland, with dappled light filtering through the canopy and patches of open ground that photograph beautifully. It has a quiet, unhurried quality that helps families — and especially children — relax quickly.
Bold Park works particularly well for families who love the outdoors, or whose children are at an age where they're curious and active. The environment gives kids something to engage with — sticks, rocks, lizards — and those moments of genuine curiosity make for some of the most honest photographs.
The park is close to City Beach and Floreat, so it's easy to combine with a short beach session if you'd like a mix of bush and ocean in the same afternoon.
Choosing the Right Location
Every family is different, and the best location often depends on the age of your children and the style of photographs you would like. When you book your session, I'm always happy to help you choose a family photography location in Perth that suits your family.
